IICRC water categories

Not all water damage is the same

The industry sorts water by how contaminated it is. The category decides what can be dried and saved, and what has to be removed.

Category 1

Clean water

From a sanitary source. Most materials can be dried in place if work starts quickly.

Examples: Supply line, burst pipe, overflowing sink

Category 2

Gray water

Some contamination. Carpet pad is usually replaced; surfaces are cleaned and treated.

Examples: Washing machine, dishwasher, sump pump failure

Category 3

Black water

Grossly contaminated. Porous materials it touched are removed, and the area is sanitized.

Examples: Sewer backup, toilet overflow, river or surface flooding

What to expect

A typical water loss, start to finish

Most clean-water jobs are dry in three to five days. Category and materials change the timeline.
